Jock itch (tinea cruris), also called “groin ringworm,” is a fungal skin disease that affects the scrotal, crural (thigh), anal, and genital areas; it is characterized by irritating, itchy, red, ring-like areas, sometimes with small blisters on the skin. It develops more frequently in warm weather and more often occurs in men than in women. Recurring bouts are common, as the fungi can survive indefinitely on the skin. The herb combination in this powder offers effective, nontoxic antifungal, astringent, and antiseptic properties to help soothe the skin and eradicate associated fungi and yeasts.
Note: Purchase all these herbs prepowdered, as most are very tough materials and practically impossible to powder using common kitchen equipment.
½ cup baking soda ½ cup cornstarch
½ cup white cosmetic clay
2 tablespoons black walnut hull powder
2 tablespoons lavender bud powder
2 tablespoons myrrh gum powder
2 tablespoons Oregon grape root powder
50 drops tea tree essential oil
25 drops sage essential oil
25 drops thyme (chemotype linalool) essential oil
EQUIPMENT: Medium bowl and whisk or food processor, mortar and pestle, airtight storage container(s)
PREP TIME: 20 minutes, plus 3 days to synergize
YIELD: Approximately 2 cups
STORAGE: Store at room temperature, away from heat and light; use within 1 year
APPLICATION:
2 or 3 times per day Combine the baking soda, cornstarch, clay, black walnut, lavender, myrrh, and Oregon grape root in a medium bowl or food processor. Slowly whisk together, or pulse in the food processor for 15 seconds, until well blended. Avoid breathing the dust, though there is no real danger of irritation as there is with cayenne powder. Measure out 6 tablespoons of the powder into a mortar. Drop by drop, add the tea tree, sage, and thyme essential oils, working them into the powder with the pestle, until the oil is absorbed. Add this oil mixture to the remaining powder. Whisk the mixture together slowly, shake vigorously in a large container with a tight-fitting lid, or pulse in the food processor for 15 seconds, until blended. Store the powder in an airtight storage container in a cool, dark place for 3 days to allow the medicinal properties of the herbal ingredients to synergize and permeate the mixture. Then package the powder in smaller containers, if desired.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Apply as you would any medicated body powder, by sprinkling or using a large cotton ball or cotton square to apply it over affected area(s). Bonus: This powder doubles as a treatment for athlete’s foot.
