Everyone has experienced splinters at some point, usually embedded in a finger or the sole of the foot. They can be difficult to remove, often breaking off at the surface of the skin. Herbal clay pack recipes can aid in the withdrawal of small wooden and metal splinters (no longer than ¼ inch) that are lodged near the surface of the skin. When thickly applied and allowed to dry, a clay pack increases circulation and temperature in the skin and helps draw out any infection present while gently pulling the splinter toward the surface. Once the clay pack is washed off, the splinter should be easier to remove with a pair of tweezers.
BLACK WALNUT CLAY PACK
This clay pack is nearly black in color from the combination of bentonite clay and black walnut hull powder. Due to its astringent and antiseptic properties and its cold, bitter energy, as it dries it tones and tightens skin tissue, cools inflammation surrounding the splinter, and helps fight potential infection.
Note: This clay pack will stain lightcolored fabrics, so be careful during application and removal. I always use a navy blue or black washcloth to remove it.
1 tablespoon bentonite clay
1 teaspoon black walnut hull powder
5–6 teaspoons commercially prepared aloe vera juice or purified water
EQUIPMENT: Small bowl, spoon or tiny whisk
PREP TIME: 5 minutes
YIELD: 1 or more treatments
STORAGE: Refrigerate any leftovers; use within 3 days
APPLICATION: As desired In a small bowl or custard cup, use a spoon or tiny whisk to combine the clay and black walnut hull powder with enough aloe vera juice or water to form a smooth, spreadable paste. Bentonite clay tends to become lumpy, so make sure to stir thoroughly. Allow to thicken for 5 minutes. If the mixture is soupy, add a bit more clay. If too thick, add a bit more liquid. Use immediately.
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Using your finger, simply spread a thick layer of clay pack over the splinter and allow to dry for at least 45 minutes. The clay will harden and may tingle and crack as it dries. Rinse with warm water. If you are now able to grip the tip of the splinter with a pair of sterilized tweezers, attempt to carefully remove it from the same angle at which it went into your skin. You may repeat the clay pack application as often as necessary until the splinter becomes easier to remove. If you have any leftover clay pack mixture, tightly cover the little bowl with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator, where it will keep for up to 3 days. If the mixture starts to dry out, add a tad more aloe vera juice or water and stir well before using.
OREGON GRAPE ROOT ANTIINFECTION CLAY PACK
The yellow pigment in this clay pack comes from the Oregon grape root, which is highly antiseptic, antiinflammatory, astringent, tissue-toning, energetically cold, and bitter. I use this clay pack when I see pus forming around an embedded splinter.
Note: This clay pack will stain lightcolored fabrics, so be careful during application and removal. I always use a navy blue or black washcloth to remove it.
